Chromosomal organization of simple sequence repeats in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas): (GGAT)(4), (GT)(7) and (TA)(10) chromosome patterns ArchiMer
Bouilly, Karine; Chaves, R.; Leitao, A.; Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Guedes Pinto, H..
Chromosome identification is essential in oyster genomic research. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) offers new opportunities for the identification of oyster chromosomes. It has been used to locate satellite DNAs, telomeres or ribosomal DNA sequences. However, regarding chromosome identification, no study has been conducted with simple sequence repeats (SSRs). FISH was used to probe the physical organization of three particular SSRs, (GGAT)(4), (GT)(7) and (TA)(10) onto metaphase chromosomes of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Hybridization signals were observed in all the SSR probes, but the distribution and intensity of signals varied according to the oligonucleotide repeat. The intercalary, centromeric and telomeric bands were observed...

Détermination de Valeurs Guides Environnementales (VGE) mollusques alternatives aux Normes de Qualité Environnementale (NQE) définies dans la DCE ArchiMer
Sire, Alizee; Amouroux, Isabelle.
The Water Framework Directive (DCE 2000/60/CE), aims to achieve the good conditions (chemical and ecological) of different waters in Europe. The Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) are the tools used to evaluate the chemical condition waters. Initially, the EQS are defined for the water matrix, but with the analytical difficulties and low spatial and temporal representativity of water samples, the monitoring of contaminants must be carried out on alternative matrices, as mollusks and particularly the mussels. Among the 45 priority and dangerous priority substances establishes by the WFD 2013/39/UE, 25 substances are hydrophobic and bioaccumulable. The main goal of this study is to determine thresholds applicable in the mussels at least as protective as...

Distribution of silver in mussels and oysters along the French coasts: Data from the national monitoring program ArchiMer
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Auger, Dominique; Roux, Nathalie; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Santini, Anne.
Distribution and behavior of many trace elements in the aquatic environment has been well characterized, but little is known about silver (Ag) concentrations in coastal waters, even though this element ranks among the most toxic to marine invertebrates (Calabrese et al., 1977 ; Fisher and Hook, 1997 ; Webb and Wood, 1998). Studies conducted by Flegal et al. (1995), River-Duarte et al. (1999), and Ndung'u et al. (2001), provided the first valuable data on Ag distribution in the oceanic environment, indicating that this element is found in very low concentrations in the dissolved phase. However, although silver concentrations in coastal waters do not reach the nanomolar range (Smith and Flegal, 1993 ; Squire et al., 2002), formation of a stable chloro...

First report of Temnocephala haswelli (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) in Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) from Brazil: description update based on specimens from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
The impact of the discovery of Temnocephala haswelli Ponce de Léon, 1989, described as ectosymbionts of ampullariid apple snails outside of Uruguay, motivated us to collect a large number of specimens of Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) from several localities in the southern portion of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This species was recorded three times after its description: in a study of chromosomes, in a study about the ultrastructure of the collar receptor cells, and in a study of the Haswell glands, all conducted in Uruguay. A total of 301 specimens of P. canaliculata were collected from 1999 to 2007. Temnocephalans found in the pallial cavity were identified as T. haswelli, which occurred in single infestations or concurrently with Temnocephala...

First report of Temnocephala rochensis (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) from Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) outside Uruguay: description update based on specimens from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
Temnocephala rochensis Ponce de Léon, 1979, was the second of four species of Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849 to be described as ectosymbiont of ampullariid apple snails, Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822). There have been no records of this Uruguayan species after its initial description. As part of the present study, 111 specimens of P. canaliculata were collected between 2003 and 2009. Temnocephalans found in the pallial cavity were identified as T. rochensis, occurring in single infestations, or concurrently with Temnocephala haswelli Ponce de Léon, 1989. Specimens of T. rochensis showed a conspicuous red eye pigment which faded after ethanol fixation. Important taxonomic characters of the reproductive system were evidenced by several techniques, and...

Influence of temperature, salinity and E. coli tissue content on immune gene expression in mussel: Results from a 2005-2008 survey ArchiMer
Li, Hui; Toubiana, Mylene; Monfort, Patrick; Roch, Philippe.
Several bivalves, including mussels, suffered from mortalities particularly in summer. To look for the possible effect of environmental parameters on immune capacities, Mytilus galloprovincialis were collected monthly from August 2005 to July 2008 from the Palavas Laguna, French Mediterranean coast. Q-PCR was used to quantify the expression of three antimicrobial peptide genes (defensin, mytilin B and myticin B), in addition to lysozyme and HSP70. House keeping gene was 28S rRNA. Defensin, myticin B and lysozyme appeared more expressed in spring-summer than in winter. In contrast, HSP70 expression was higher in winter. Statistical studies using principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression models revealed positive influence of temperature on...

LA CLASE CAUDOFOVEATA (MOLLUSCA) EN EL MAR CARIBE COLOMBIANO* Boletín de Investigaciones
Gracia C.,Adriana; Fontalvo,Erlenis; Gámez,Luis Carlos.
Five classes of marine mollusks, including Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Scaphopoda, and Polyplacophora, have been recorded inhabiting the Colombian Caribbean Sea. Other classes with a basal position within the phylum such as Caudofoveata and Solenogastres have remained overlooked, as a result of their body shape (worm-like with no shell), small sizes (Caudofoveata 1.5 to 140 mm length), and limited taxonomic information for identifications. The presence of Caudofoveata species on the continental margin of the Colombian Caribbean Sea was evidenced through several studies conducted by Invemar between 2007 and 2012. Samples were collected from localities between Gulf of Morrosquillo and La Guajira, in a bathymetrical range from 3 to 1010 m depth. These...

Lipid composition of the pacific lion-paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus, in relation to gametogenesis - 2. Lipid classes and sterols ArchiMer
Palacios, Elena; Racotta, I.s.; Arjona, O; Marty, Y; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
Knowledge on the energy distribution during the reproductive cycle of the giant lion-paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus is limited, but necessary for aquaculture purposes. In a previous work, we found that natural food availability can sustain the full cost of gametogenesis in optimal environmental conditions. The present study analyses the lipid and sterol classes' composition of several tissues during gametogenesis. In female gonads, the quantity of triacylglycerol (TG) increased parallel to gametogenesis from December (spawned gonads, 0.7 mg g(-1) or 7% of total lipids) to June (ripe gonads, 52 mg g(-1) or 66% of total lipids). In male gonads sampled in June, the concentration of TG (0.7 mg g(-1) or 3.5% of total lipids) and esterified sterols was...

Mollusk bycatch in trawl fisheries targeting the Atlantic seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri on the coast of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Mendonça,Luana Marina de Castro; Guimarães,Carmen Regina Parisotto; Lima,Silvio Felipe Barbosa.
Abstract The malacofauna bycatch of sea-bob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) trawl fisheries on the coast of Sergipe was studied for 5 years. The malacofauna bycatch considered was obtained in nine oceanographic sampling campaigns carried out between May 1999 and June 2003 in 18 stations distributed in six transects along depths of 10, 20 and 30 m. A total of 2,669 individuals of mollusk belonging to 54 species were captured on the 18 sea-bob shrimp trawl stations carried out along the coast of Sergipe. The considerable richness of mollusks was composed by 19 families and 31 species of gastropods, 12 families and 19 species of bivalves and 2 families and 4 species of cephalopods. The highest abundance were observed at stations 13 (373...

Naididae (Annelida, Oligochaeta) associated with Pomacea bridgesii (Reeve) (Gastropoda, Ampullaridae) Zoologia
Gorni,Guilherme R.; Alves,Roberto da G..
The family Amplullaridae belongs to this class Gastropoda and is made up of freshwater organisms with a wide geographical distribution in tropical regions. Oligochaeta worms can be found in association with snails of this family, inhabiting the umbilicus of their shells. Due to the lack of information on the ecology of these worms, this work focused on investigating which kind of Oligochaeta species associate with the mollusk Pomacea bridgesii (Reeve, 1856). Samples were collected during winter and spring 2003 and summer 2004. From a total of 209 snails collected, the presence of Oligochaeta worms was observed in only 58 of them (27.75%). In these infected snails, 89 Oligochaeta worms were found, all belonging to the family Naididae. The species Haemonais...

Redescription of Temnocephala iheringi (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) based on specimens from Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the possible type host and type locality Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
The original description of Temnocephala iheringi Haswell, 1893 was based on specimens collected by Hermann von Ihering from undetermined ampullariid apple snails, which at that time were identified as Ampullaria sp., and sent to William H. Haswell, with the type locality simply indicated as Brazil. The type specimens studied by Haswell were not found in the scientific collections of Brazil, Europe or Australia, and should be considered lost. In 1941, Pereira & Cuocolo collected specimens from apple snails, identified as Pomacea lineata (Spix in Wagner, 1827), at two localities (Guaicurús and Salobra) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, central Brazil. These specimens could not be located either and should, thus, be considered lost as well. Pomacea...
